The Maine Maid Inn History

The original homestead that became The Maine Maid Inn was built in 1789. Valentine & Abigail Hicks, prominent members of the Quaker community that founded Jericho, moved into the residence with their three daughters in 1812. In 1837, Valentine was elected President of the Long Island Railroad and was instrumental in bringing the rail service to the area. (The Hicksville station was named in his honor). Valentine lived in the Inn until he passed away in 1850; one hundred years later the homestead became The Maine Maid Inn.

Once you enter The Maine Maid Inn, climb the grand staircase and you will discover another type of railroad. Open the linen closet door and you will discover the portal to the famous "Underground Railroad". Wide plank floors can be seen in the Bar and Hall, these floors are original. Hard to believe…but true! Peek out your window or stroll the manicured grounds and you will see beautiful roosters and hens. They have survived since farms occupied the surrounding land back in the early days.
